When I was a fifth grader, I took a test that decided which math class I was going to take during the sixth grade, which was the year that middle school started. In itself, that’s not that crazy of a thing - we take tests for all sorts of things all the time.

There were three classes that we could have taken in 6th grade, from what I remember — the first was the normal, 6th grade math — followed by an “advanced” class (which is the one you take in 7th grade), and then pre-algebra.
